WHICH SERVICE DO YOU NEED?
LGB LOCOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS
Minimum fee is $55 to test, diagnose and perform general maintenance on an LGB locomotive, e.g., regrease motor block gears, oil axles, etc. Total repair costs depend upon the complexity and time to repair your locomotive, plus price of parts. For example, the fee to replace a motor into an LGB Stainz locomotive D Motor Block is $85 plus $60 for the motor.
INSTALL DCC/DC SOUND DECODER INTO LGB LOCOMOTIVE
DCC Sound Decoder & Speaker Installation Fee: $150 for single motor block locomotive plus parts costs; Fee for a two motor block locomotive is $175. DCC Sound Decoders cost $165 - $215; Speakers are $12 - $20. Sound Decoders Installed: Massoth, ESU, Marklin/LGB mfx/dcc, Phoenix, Piko American Steam, Soundtraxx, and LGB 65000 Sound Modules. The total cost parts and labor for a DCC/DC Sound decoder installation ranges $330 - $700.
CONVERT LGB LOCOMOTIVE 3-PIN TO 4-PIN MOTOR BLOCK
A 4-Pin motor block is required to install a DCC Sound Decoder except for the Massoth S decoder, the LGB 65000 series Sound Modules, and the Phoenix PB17 Sound Board which only required DC or DCC track power to function. Conversion fee is $30 per motor block.
LGB MOGUL LOCOMOTIVE DC ANALOG MOTOR BLOCK OVERHALL & REFURBISHMENT
When an older LGB Mogul locomotive stops operating, usually the motor has failed from years of operating use. A complete motor block overhaul should also be performed in this situation. The motor block is completely disassembled and the following items removed: failed motor; wheels sets with driving rods, axles and gears; idler gears; carbon brushes; slider shoes. The motor block is throughly flushed clean; the wheels sets are thoughly cleaned to remove carbon build-up on the inner wheels. The motor block is reassembled with a new motor, new idler gears and carbon brushes. All gears are regreased and wheel axles and driving rod joints oiled; new slider shoes installed; traction tires replaced. Complete Motor Block Overhaul & Refurbishment Service: $125 plus parts ($60 LGB Buhler Motor; Idler Gear Set $9; Carbon Brushes 4 Pack $8).

LGB LOCOMOTIVE PACKING AND SHIPMENT: Use the original red LGB storage box with the Styrofoam insert. Add small pieces of small bubble wrap wedged between the front and end of the locomotive, and if its a Mogul, roll up a piece of bubble wrap wedged between the locomotive and the tender, to prevent any movement inside the Styrofoam insert. You should ensure the LGB loco can not move back and forth, sideways, or up and down inside the LGB red storage box during the shipment process that could cause breakage. I've received several LGB Mogul locomotives with broken cow catcher support brackets and the smoke stack broken during shipping. If you can hear or feel your locomotive move when you turn the red LGB storage box upside down, you need to add more insulating material to the roof of the locomomotive and around the locomotive to secure it inside the foam container. Next, use a larger shipping box than the red LGB storage box so that at least two inches of foam peanuts or other insulating material completely surround the LGB box. For my LGB locomotive shipments of large, heavy locomotives such as a Mogul locomotive, I use a FedEx 48x15x15 inch Golf Bag Box costing $12 which have double think walls.........see photo below. I then use masking tape to hold several layers of air bags and medium bubble wrap so the locomotive will be able to aborb handling shocks. For smaller locomotives, I use a shipping box 32 x 12 x 12 inches that provides space for the foam peanuts to completely surrount the red LGB storage box. I've used FedEx Ground or Home Delivery Insured, Signature Receipt for my shipments. Note: If you no longer have the original red LGB Storage Box for your LGB Mogul locomotive, please contact me for guidance on how to properly package your locomotive for shipment so it will not arrive damaged.
Before installing a DCC decoder, your locomotive will be bench tested, and the motor block opened to inspect the gears and axles, to identify any electrical or mechanical issues. You will be notified if any critical repairs are needed including the estimated parts and labor, e.g., replacing broken or very worn idler gears or carbon brushes. New gear grease will be added to the motor block and the wheels and carbon brushes will be cleaned and axles oiled at no additional charge.
The average total cost parts and labor for a DCC/DC Sound/Power decoder installation is $325 - $500 depending upon accessory devices installed, e.g., Massoth volume control board, sound activation trigger, LED headlight/taillight, pulsed smoke unit, etc. Your LGB locomotive must have a "D" motor block (4-pin), marked on the bottom, to install a DCC decoder; conversion of an older LGB 3-pin motor block to 4-pin capable motor block is $25 per motor block.

Feedback from Customers
# October 2021: Just this afternoon I had the chance to open my LGB 2071D.
Weather in central Ohio has not allowed me to get outside, but I set it up on my work table to check it out. I am thrilled. The sound is spectacular.
The look of the loco beautiful. The functionality, and the number of function options is incredible. The extremely high level of your professional skill is on full display with the time and effort you invested in this loco.
I have lost track if this is the fifth, or the sixth LGB Sound Decoder upgrade you have done for me. Each and everyone has exceeded my expectations with regard to your significant ability, your communication level, and the final result. When I placed my LGB 2071D on the track for it’s first test you would think I am 12 years old again. I was that excited, and pleased with my loco. Thank you my friend for the your time, effort and imagination. Although I have always enjoyed my LGB hobby, since finding you my level of enjoyment with my hobby has significantly increased.

Next I want to get my LGB 2040 “Croc” to you for your professional services. Same drill again. Remove previously installed decoder and install proper Massoth Sound Decoder and Speaker. Can I UPS it to you later this coming week? I will include a complete listing of my service request with the 2040. Looking forward to having you work your magic with my 2040. # July 2018: "The service I received from Tom was of the highest quality and exceeded my expectations. I appreciated the attention to detail he took in the process of installing a DCC unit to one of my G Scale engines and then taking the time to sit down with me and demonstrate the functions of the DCC unit. I did not feel like I was just another customer to him, but rather a fellow G Scale enthusiast. I have several more G Scale engines I need to have DCC units installed in, and Tom is the only person I would have do the work."
